Catherine Dwen Montgomery

July 2, 1960 — February 17, 2022

Catherine Dwen Montgomery, AIA, passed away on February 17, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 61.

Catherine was born on July 2, 1960 in Colorado Springs, CO to Sarah and Robert King, where she grew up, graduating from Wasson High School in 1978. She went on to earn a B.A. in Architecture and a B.A. in Environmental Design from the University of Kansas in 1983. During her 40-year architecture career, she worked at the University of Maryland, Oklahoma State Historical Society, and the City of Oklahoma City before opening Preservation and Design Studio in 2009.

She had a passion for architecture and was a pillar of historic preservation in Oklahoma. Notable projects include her work on the University of Maryland’s Center for Young Children, the Skirvin Hilton in OKC, and the historic Calvary Baptist Church restoration in OKC. She was an active member of the American Institute of Architects and served on multiple boards for architectural organizations in Oklahoma. Catherine’s contribution to architecture and historic preservation in Oklahoma can be seen throughout the state.

A Memorial Service in Catherine's honor is being planned for a date in the near future.

A devout Christian, she was a loyal member of the Bethesda United Church of Christ in Maryland and Mayflower Congregational Church in OKC. She enjoyed singing in both church choirs and a community choir. She had a lifetime involvement in charitable efforts, including St. Baldrick’s Day and volunteering at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Her hobbies included photography, beads, travel, and family genealogy.

Catherine is preceded in death by her parents, sister Brenda, nephew Sean, niece Kiah, and the best damn dog in the world, Patty. She is survived by her husband Alexander Montgomery, daughters Caitlin and Faith, stepson Edward, siblings Robin, Michaela, Sharon, and Zachary, and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
