Dorothy Hames, 85, passed away on October 3, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK.
Dorothy was born on July 29, 1937 in Cotton County at her aunts home, to Eunice and Victor Knapp becoming the younger sister to her brother Roy. While her parents union was not to last, she was blessed with wonderful relationships with her step father Richard Harrison and step mother Gladys Knapp who helped raise her.
Dorothy was a long time member of Snow Hill Baptist church where in 1953, she met Jackie Hames. On November 10, 1954 the two were married and four boys were the result of that union, Dick Lyndal, Randy Leroy, Ronnie Jud and David DeWayne. This union almost didn't take place because on Dorothy and Jackie's first meeting, he kept pulling her hair and she locked herself in the car to get away from him! But she gave in to his charms and the two had nearly 64 years of a wonderful life together. Dorothy and Jackie traveled the world together and saw and did many amazing things. They were also members of the Rollin' Okies, a motorhome travel club. In later years, they enjoyed spending the winter season in south Texas in their motorhome.
Following the death of her son David that involved a motor accident caused by a drunk driver, Dorothy advocated for Mothers Against Drunk Driving to launch statewide including speaking in front of legislators at the State Capitol. She was also known for delivering grief books to families who experienced the loss of a child and was intentional to use her grief to help others.
Dorothy was best known as an accomplished seamstress, quilter, artist and cook. She painted portraits and mostly landscapes and went on to teach art classes in the community. Her artistic talent transitioned to cake baking and decorating for many years. Family members were proud to receive a quilt or many times clothing made with love by her. Family dinners and holiday meals were Dorothy's specialty that often included fried chicken, roast, Ham and Napa cabbage salad. On Thursdays, she and Jackie would venture to Ken's to split a steak and would find them at Sherrie's Diner on Sunday mornings, having breakfast with whatever friends and family showed up.
She enjoyed meeting with her group of ladies Jo Hill, Joyce Burright and Zita Adams playing mahjong and later on scrabble. She loved giving and receiving hugs and her smile lit up a room. She was a larger than life woman who left this world for a larger than life place.
Dorothy is survived by her son Ronnie Hames; son Randy Hames and wife Donna; granddaughter Vicki Allred and husband David; grandson Scott Hames; granddaughter Jacquelyn Koenig and husband Cole; grandson Dustin Hames and wife Amber; grandson Ryan Hames and wife Gabby; granddaughter Tonya Robertson and husband Tripp; grandson David Hames; great grandchildren Macey, Addison, Rachel, Aidan, Conner, Elizabeth, Matthew, Breanna, Oakley and Talon; great-great grandchildren Hudsyn and Henley; and brother Roy Knapp.
