Martha Ann Cox, age 98, of Tuttle, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 5, 2024 in Yukon, Oklahoma.
Martha was born October 15, 1926 in Topeka, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Annie and Ernest Sterling. She was raised along with her seven siblings in Topeka where she attended school. Her father died tragically when Martha was 13 years old which lead her to write an essay about the loss of her father that was published. Her childhood best friend was Phyllis Barnes who later married Martha's brother which made them best friends and family for many years. Martha graduated with the Topeka High School class of 1945.
After graduation, Martha and Phyllis packed up and boarded a bus to Los Angelas, California where they both secured jobs. It was here that Martha met Brooks Cox and the two experienced an immediate connection. It wasn't long before they were married in LA and relocated to Oklahoma. Coming from humble beginnings, Martha and Brooks worked hard to build a life for their family that was better than they had.
Martha was blessed with four daughters Roxie Ann, Cynthia Lavonne, Marla Jo, and Paula Beth. She loved being a mother who was hands on with her children. Martha read bible stories at night, made their clothes, and taught them how to cook. Martha and Brooks were so proud when they purchased their first family farm in Tuttle, Oklahoma in 1957. Martha remained on the homestead for nearly 70 years. Her most joyful role was being a Grandma to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was happiest when her family visited the farm, the kids were playing outside, and she was making meals for them.
Martha spent many years working in a variety of roles for the Bank of Tuttle. The role she was known most for was co-owner of Brooks Carpet. Martha was the brain child behind the business which became a staple for the community and home builders for nearly four decades. Martha ran the office and Brooks managed the sales and labor. The two were a dynamic duo in business and appreciated for their honesty, amazing service, and quality products ranging from various carpets to vacuums.
Martha was a woman of faith throughout her life. She taught Sunday School for the young married class at church, faithfully attended church and revivals, and read her bible daily. She was a humble kind and considerate woman who always put others before herself.
Martha is survived by her daughter Roxie McBride; daughter Cynthia Jones and husband Jerry; daughter Paula Cox; grandchildren Michael McBride, Stasha Martin, Jessica McGavic and husband John, Jay Jones and wife Angie, Natasha Jenks and husband Kevin, Brandon Brackett, Mandy Lingle and husband Andy, Natalie Cannon and husband Chad, and Jared Glass, 14 great grandchldren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
