Ruth Hardenia Douglas, lifelong resident of Tuttle, Oklahoma, went to her final home Monday, February 10, 2025 at the age of 94.
Ruth was born January 23, 1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a daughter of Lillie and Hardin Greene. With her father working in the oilfield, her family moved frequently during her childhood years. She attended Tuttle High School, graduating with the class of 1948.
One upperclassman that caught her attention was Everett Douglas, who graduated a year before her. The two fell in love and the rest was history. Ruth took a bus to Roswell, New Mexico, where Everett was stationed in the Air Force. The two were married April 24, 1951 and for the next 57 years they stood by one another as a couple who made an amazing team. They were blessed with three children: Everett Alan, Gayla Ruth, and Terry Morgan. She was a hands-on mother who was her children's best cheerleader. She loved making sure they had home cooked meals and a loving home to be raised in.
Her favorite role of all was being "Memaw" and Grandma to her eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was the best grandmother and loved staying connected with each one of them, whether it was in person or even figuring out how to use new technology like FaceTime to show them they were loved. She was happiest when she had a house full of family with a crowded table.
Ruth was a wonderful seamstress and gardener. She enjoyed making crafts, collecting bells, and embroidery. She was an excellent cook: her family especially loved her salmon and gravy for breakfast. She nurtured the musical talent in her family. Although Ruth sang beautifully and played piano, her timid nature meant she didn't perform in front of others. It was the joy of her heart to hear her children and grandchildren sing and play instruments.
Not only was she a faithful wife, loving, mother and grandmother - she had a work ethic second to none. She enjoyed helping Everett on his job sites. She would paint, clean up, run errands for him, and bring him lunch when he couldn't make it home. Having a husband who was a homebuilder meant moving often because every house they lived in was for sale. Ruth and Everett had built a solid reputation for providing well-built homes for over four decades before handing it off to their sons.
She was a woman of strong faith in the Lord and set an example of faithfulness for her whole family. She was a humble woman and was always ready and wiling to serve others. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and unwavering faith. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Ruth is survived by her three children: Alan Douglas and wife Mary Lou, Gayla Waitman and husband Tommy, Terry Douglas and wife Evette; eight grandchildren: Shonda Benton and husband Jason, Jeff Douglas and wife Stefanie, Scott Douglas and wife Micah, Israel Waitman and wife Susan, Bradley Waitman and wife Amy, Heather Rose and husband Shawn, Morgan Douglas, Madison Corbin and husband Rhett, Nathan Burris and wife Shelby, and Natalie Burris and husband Manuel; twenty-seven great-grandchildren: Cooper Benton, Tyler Benton, Easton Benton, Kelsey Douglas, Mark Douglas, Shane Douglas, Kate Douglas, Wade Douglas, Claire Douglas, Isaac Waitman and wife Ana Sofia, Hannah Engerbretson and husband Alec, Joshua Waitman and wife Madeline, Grace Paul and husband Silas, Olivia Waitman, Anne Waitman, Elizabeth Waitman, Sarah Waitman, Elijah Waitman, Hollis Waitman, Doc Savage, Jude Savage, Isabella Waitman, Wyatt Rose, Ridge Burris, Ramey Burris, Sebastian, and Oaklen Corbin; and ten great-great-grandchildren: Eva Jane, Henry, Nora, Maria, June, Miles, Ella, Bowen, Selah, and Lucia.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Everett Douglas; parents Lillie and Hardin Greene; sister Bobby Jean Greene; brother Gwindle Greene; sister Patsy Merritt; sister Pebble Hovis; and brother Darrel Greene.
